The varsity boys’ basketball team participated in a tournament for small schools in the area December 27-29 during winter break. The team brought home a winning title, as well as hope for the remainder of the season.

The Whataburger Basketball Tournament took place at Chisholm Trail High School in Saginaw. The coaches felt it necessary that the teams participated as it gets them back in the feel of playing after the break.

“I think the outcome is a confidence booster for the rest of the season,” senior Wilson Hicks said. “We now believe we can play against any team.”

Each year, one player receives the MVP award after the championship game at the tournament. A reward committee watches for those who stand out and deserve recognition.

“Wilson Hicks got the MVP award this year,” Coach Drew Coffman said. “He had the best overall performance out of all the games we’ve played. He led our team in scoring at our last game and his leadership really stood out.”

Although an individual receives the title, the award shows how the entire team works together as a whole and pushes each other to achieve great things.

“I think the MVP award was more of a credit to the team,” Hicks said. “We play our best when we play for one another.”
