Rather than just prom in 2022, Decatur’s expanded their horizons and added a Winter Formal to the list of activities.

Thanks to the hard work of the Decatur Student Council, DHS plans to host their first dance of 2022 next month. The Winter Formal is set to take place one month prior to prom on Feb. 12 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the DHS cafeteria.

While the new dance may seem sudden to students, Student Council has played around with the idea since the beginning of fall semester. They originally planned to put on a homecoming dance, but when that didn’t work out, they set their sights on a winter dance.

This year, we were planning to have a homecoming dance but that didn’t turn out as planned because homecoming week came four weeks after school started this year. So, we decided to change that homecoming dance to the winter formal,” Student Council President Diya Patel said.

Student Council plans to sell discounted tickets for the event during students’ lunches in the week leading up to the dance, with a price uptick for purchasing a ticket at the door.

Tickets will go on sale during lunches the week of the dance (February 7-11). Tickets purchased during lunch will be $10,” Student Council sponsor Raegan Bayless said. “Tickets purchased at the door will be sold for $15.”

Beyond the classic dancing and DJ, the Winter Formal is set to have cornhole, concessions and a photobooth. To make the dance even more personalized to students, the Student Council is giving students the opportunity to make song requests by scanning QR codes around the school.

The Student Council has prepared for the formal by hiring a DJ, hanging posters, and planning out how we want to decorate the cafeteria,” Student Council Vice President Peyton Wade said.

With the date set, decorations planned and song requests coming in, the Student Council is ready to go.

We are hopeful that this dance is a success so next year we can have a ‘Howdy Dance’ at the beginning of the year and/or a Homecoming dance,” Bayless said. “We understand this one is a little close to prom; regardless, it will still be a blast (no pun intended)!”
