Volleyball

District champs, Bi-District champs, Area champs, and Regional-Quarter Final champs; the volleyball girls are once again paving their way to State.

The Lady Eagles

won in the Regional-Quarter finals against Stephenville on Tuesday, advancing them to the Regional Semi-Finals.

“It’s an extreme amount of pressure. If anybody can handle it, it’s this group for sure,” head volleyball coach Claire Gay said.

Last year the girls took first in state, marking the first time that the Lady Eagles have ever won a state championship.

“This is the closest our team has been all four years of me being a part of the program,” senior Cooper Martin said. “I feel that because of that, we are successful.”

The next game is tomorrow at 1pm in Snyder, opening the regional tournament.

Cross Country

Racing their way to regionals, the cross country team placed first at the district meet last Thursday at the Wise County Reunion Grounds for the eleventh year in a row.

The regional meet is tomorrow at Mae-Simmons Park in Lubbock.

“It’s a real hilly course, so along with competing against the other teams, you have to compete against the course because out of the four regional courses it’s the toughest one,” Coach David Park said.

Though the course may be an obstacle for the team, that doesn’t stop them from going for the gold.

“We have pretty high expectations and so we felt like if we trained hard this is where we would be with a chance to go to state,” Park said. “It makes you feel good that one of the goals they were trying to accomplish, they accomplished.”

Both teams left for Lubbock today and will run tomorrow with the girls starting at noon and the boys at 12:30pm.

“Trust your training. Don’t get too worked up and don’t get nervous,” Park advises the team. “You put in all this hard work, just let the hard work work for you.”

Swim

At the Colony Sprint Invitational meet Saturday, Sept. 27, the swim team placed sixth overall with the girls placing third overall, making it their first meet of the season.

Senior Katey Rowden placed first in the women’s 100 free and the 50 butterfly. Sophomore Allie Blevins placed fifth in the women’s 25 free and seventh in the 200 freestyle. Junior Colton Teter placed fifth in the men’s 25 free and sophomore Ethan Miles placed eighth in the men’s 50 backstroke. Senior Kate Grant placed sixth in the women’s 50 backstroke.

Senior Emily Howdeshell, Blevins, Grant and Rowden placed third as a team in the women’s 100 freestyle relay with 53.07 seconds. The same team of girls placed eighth in the women’s 200 freestyle relay with 1 minute and 54.71 seconds.

“They did phenomenally well as a team,” swim coach Caroline Renfro said.

This is Renfro’s first year as swim coach at DHS, as well as her first year coaching at a high school.

“The best part about being a swim coach is being in the pool, helping the kids learn technique and turns, just being part of a team and helping kids do their personal best,” Renfro said.

The next swim meet is today at 5pm at the Grapevine Natatorium.
