When Sean Akchin was named as the new boys’ head soccer coach, players expected great results.
“I thought it would be completely different,” senior Luis Santillan said, “but I still knew it was going to be a great season because I trusted the experience of the coach and his knowledge of the game and that we were in the right hands.”
Now in late January with the season at the midpoint, the team seems to have taken a different approach than teams past.
“The formation, everything about practice (has changed), slower tempo, there’s a more serious attitude about it,” sophomore Tyler Wilson said
Though new players arrived on the team, returning players made sure the goal remains the same, to win.
“We want to win every district game and win a playoff game,” sophomore Juan Gamino said
With a pre-district schedule tougher than in years past, the results sadly were not what the team expected.
“We lost a lot of the games, but we never gave up and kept fighting in every game. We learned from our mistakes and got better,” Santillian said.
With district set to begin in less than a month the team has a long goal, to be a contender for the district title.
“We have good players with good talent that can give a lot of input to the team. If the talent is used properly, I think we have good chances to win,” Santillan said.
District play begins Feb. 8 in Decatur against Wichita Falls Hirschi.
